Pharmacy Technician

 A Pharmacy Technician is an individual who, under the supervision of a pharmacist, assists in the performance of activities of the pharmacy department not requiring the professional judgment of a pharmacist. They assist and support licensed pharmacists in providing healthcare to patients.

 Pharmacy Technicians have been called pharmacy helpers, pharmacy clinicians, pharmacy support personnel and various others. In al parts of the country, pharmacy technicians must have a broad knowledge of pharmacy practice and must be skilled in the techniques required to order, stock, package and prepare medications but they so not need to have the advanced college education required of a licensed pharmacist.

Pharmacy Technicians may perform many of the same duties as a pharmacist; however, all of their work must be checked by a pharmacist before medication can be dispensed to a patient.

LICENSING & CERTIFICATION

PTCB and NHA

PTCB is a national certification program that enables pharmacy technicians to work more effectively with pharmacists to offer safe and effective patient care and service. PTCB develops and implements policies related to national certification for pharmacy technicians. PTCB administers a nationally accredited certification examination for pharmacy technicians which tests knowledge in all practice settings.

Individuals who meet all eligibility requirements and who successfully pass the national Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination may use the designation "CPhT" after their name. A certificate and wallet card will be sent to newly Certified Pharmacy Technicians approximately six to eight weeks after sitting for the examination. Certification is valid for two years.
